Who will win the Premier League Golden Boot this season?

Premier League football returned on Wednesday 17th, with Manchester City and Arsenal who have contestants for the prestigious league’s golden boot squaring off, and probably will get chances to add to their already impressive-looking hauls.

After the hostilities of last season, the accolade was eventually shared between Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Yet the trio are in the running again for the award this term, having plundered 47 goals between them before the season was halted.

For the records, former Arsenal man Thierry Henry won the award a record four times and is one of only two players to have won the award three years in a row, between 2003/04 and 2005/06. Alan Shearer is the other, for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, between 1994/95 and 1996/97.

So let us check out who stands the best chance of scooping the prize this time, or who could usurp the odds.

The betting favourites

Following another age-defying campaign, Jamie Vardy is Bet365‘s favourite, 2.87 to cart home the honour for the first time in his career. The Leicester City striker, 33, currently tops the league’s goal charts with 19 goals, his latest coming in a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa before football was called off. Thus, his performances in the final third will be very vital in the Foxes’ push for a Champions League qualification finish.

Aubameyang is 4.50 to win the Golden Boot for the second season running after netting 17 goals to establish himself as one of the best goal poachers in the division.

Sergio Aguero is an eye-catching 6.00 behind the Gabonese, with the Manchester City striker showing no signs of slowing down having accrued a haul of 16 goals all in just 21 appearances thus far.

The Argentine boasted 164 Premier League goals prior to the start of this season — the sixth-most of all time, and looks set to be in line for his sixth consecutive 20-goal season in the English topflight.

Salah comes next on 7.00,having taken the Premier League by storm since joining Liverpool and is out to win his third Golden Boot in a row.

The Egyptian has 16 to his name so far this season and a total of 70 goals for the Reds in the Premier League, which is more than any other player since his debut in August 2017.

The betting underdogs

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has shot up in this regard (15.00) having recovered from his back injury, emerging as one of the contenders despite been two goals behind the duo of Salah and Aguero, and a further three adrift of Aubameyang.

Thus with 14 goals so far, the 22-year-old is having his most productive season in the topflight since turning professional, and will be influential for the Red Devils in their bid to qualify for Europe.

Next in the running is Mane (17.00) also with 14 goals for Liverpool in just 22 starts this season.

The Senegalese came fourth in the Ballon d’Or voting last year and is also one of the frontrunners to win PFA Player of the Year amid another stellar season for the Merseyside outfit.

Fit-again Tottenham forward Harry Kane is also available at the same price having plundered 11 goals in just 20 outings.

The betting outsiders

Southampton’s 15-goal striker Danny Ings is having his best season in the Premier League, and is the first Saints player to score that many in a single season since Jay Rodriguez managed it in 2013-14.

It is very unlikely he usurps the odds and claims the prize this season despite his best efforts, but he can be backed for an attractive 21.00.

Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling who scored in the win over Arsenal yesterday for his 12th of the season is an outside 67.00 shot alongside his teammate Gabriel Jesus with ten to boot.

Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) is 101.00 for value while Anthony Martial (Man United), Kevin De Bruyne (Man City), Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) and Teemu Pukki (Norwich) are all tied at 151.00.
